This recipe from Great-Grandma Mary’s stash is called Hoale, and the headline says, “Haole Makes Meal”. Haole is a term that means, all things not Hawaiian. I don’t know as much as I’d like to about Hawaiian food, so I don’t know what modern day Hawaiians would say about his recipe. Let me know if you’ve got any insight!
We had this for dinner but I think it qualifies for breakfast, lunch, dinner or even snack time. You can make it savory, or sprinkle powdered sugar and serve it with jam, just like a Monte Cristo.
Hope you love it as much as my fam does!
Haole
4 slice white bread
4 slices chicken
4 slices ham
4 slices american cheese*
1 egg
1 Tbsp milk
pinch of sugar
pinch of salt
butter
Remove crusts from bread. Butter one side of the bread. On each slice of bread place a slice of chicken, ham and cheese. Roll the bread jelly-roll style. Then slice each roll into three portions.
Mix egg, milk, sugar, and salt together. Dip each roll into the egg mixtures, rolling to cover all sides.
Melt butter over medium heat. Add sandwiches to the pan and fry on all sides until lightly browned and the cheese is melted.
Serve warm and garnish with sliced pineapple, jam and powdered sugar.
*I used classic yellow american cheese, it was a little overpowering. I think my batch will include swiss style American or even a milder creamy cheese like havarti.
Crusts off…not much to it.
Lightly butter the bread, you really don’t need much. See, you have to squint to see it!
Chicken first…
Ham second…
Cheese time!
Roll them up. Don’t worry if they look crumbly and imperfect like mine, they still make a tasty treat once they’re all cooked up.
Cut each roll into three smaller pieces.
Pour the egg, milk, salt and sugar into a bowl. (Or a pie pan.)
Stir them up, dip the rolls. Make sure they get covered on all sides.
Get the pan heated, the butter melted and the rolls cookin’.
Pardon the terrible picture! I just had to include it so you don’t forget to cook them on all sides.
aaannnnnd…voilà!
What meal will you serve these for?
