I wouldn’t have expected this one from Grandma Joyce…I don’t really remember her as a ketchup kind of girl. To be honest, I snickered a bit as I was making this less than impressive dish. I’m not a ketchup girl myself, especially not the kind that likes ketchup on her eggs!

This recipe was a bit of a puzzle. I didn’t read ahead, just bought the ingredients and figured the rest could be sorted out in the kitchen. Not so easy…The recipe card doesn’t include an oven temperature and it has “MW” and some numbers written in a few spots.

As I comb through this stash of recipes I absolutely love finding handwritten notes along the way. I feel like these notes give me a glimpse of what my grandmas had on their mind. They are like a sneak peak into their journal.
Chile Relleno Squares
The amount of green chiles that sneak into Great-Grandma Mary’s recipes show her California ranching roots. I think they’re a necessity in a lot of western cooking and I absolutely love that they show up so frequently!
