My strawberry patch is going nuts. Almost makes me look like I have a green thumb. (Don’t be fooled.) This recipe describes a classic strawberry pie with fresh berries and a strawberry glaze. I was excited for a delicious way to put the berries to use and an excuse to make the glaze from scratch as most strawberry pies use a jar of red goo that kinda grosses me out.
This one is a spin on the classic. It caught me off guard because I kept finding myself on automatic pilot grabbing the standard pesto ingredients and then realizing, they do NOT belong in this recipe. If you want to be a stickler I don’t think this is technically considered pesto but I’ll do anything to get the smell of fresh basil in my kitchen.
Grandma Joyce liked to keep things simple in a classic kind of way. She wasn’t fussy and she didn’t leave room for much fluff. I love that about her because her recipes aren’t full of tedious, unnecessary steps.
I was a bit skeptical but I followed the recipe as it was written. Maybe Grandma Mary knows something about mayonnaise that I don’t. Nope. What I discovered is that quite possibly she and other women in the 60s might just appreciate it more than we do nowadays.
